Swollen Gums – Early Signs of Gingivitis

If your gums bleed or swell, you must know what causes bleeding gums. Bleeding gums cause mental and physical discomfort and pain. You must be aware that a bigger medical problem may be behind such a condition. There is a need therefore to visit a dentist so as to stop whatever it is that causes bleeding gums.

Gum Diseases Causes Bleeding Gums

A gum disease is what causes gums to bleed. Gingivitis is the first stage of this disease where the gums become tender and swollen. When you eat or brush your teeth, this easily causes bleeding gums. Also known as periodontal disease, this happens because of plaque buildup that irritates the gums. When gingivitis is not treated, it will lead to a more severe disease called periodontitis, which then causes teeth loss.

An Act that Causes Bleeding Gums

Brushing forcefully causes bleeding gums. When you brush with commercial toothpaste, this is already considered rough on the teeth. If you brush vigorously, this will inflict more harm to your teeth. Forceful brushing is what causes gums to bleed especially if the gums are not healthy.

Chewing or smoking cigarettes causes bleeding gums. When you smoke, you will develop tartar or calculus that makes the gums bleed. Tobacco also irritates the gums. Refrain from smoking so as to have overall good health.

Taking certain drugs causes bleeding gums. These include antidepressants, anticoagulants, oral and nasal sprays. Avoid these drugs in order to stop your gums from bleeding and developing further complications.

Vitamin Deficiency

When you lack Vitamin K, this can lead to bleeding gums. This vitamin is an essential factor in blood clotting. Absence of this will therefore make your gums bleed. Take supplements everyday that are rich in vitamins and minerals to have a healthy immune system that will ward off infections in the entire body.

Medical Condition that Causes Bleeding Games

There are hormone receptors rooted in the tissues of the gums. When these hormones go below or above the usual level, fluids increase in the tissue of the gums that make them swollen, tender and reddish. Once the hormones level turns back into its normal, the gums also turn back into its usual state.

There are other medical conditions that contribute to bleeding gums. These include autoimmune disorders where the immune system destroys its own cells. These include rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Any of these autoimmune disorders causes bleeding gums.

Leukemia causes bleeding gums. This is a cancer of the white blood cells and bone marrow. One of its symptoms is gums that bleed.

With these conditions mentioned, there is an urgent need to treat bleeding gums. It may not only be because of a simple condition as gingivitis but it can also be because of something life threatening such as cancer. When you experience such a condition, you should immediately see a dentist as he can perform tests to identify the root cause of the problem. Remember that something minor or severe causes bleeding gums therefore you should have it checked to be certain.
