Halitosis: Chronic Bad Breath Treatment

Halitosis: Chronic Bad Breath Treatment

Everyone has experienced bad breath at one time or another. Bad breath can occur when you eat certain foods, such as onions or garlic, but that is a temporary situation. Chronic bad breath, also known as halitosis, occurs if you have poor dental hygiene, smoke, have gum disease or constantly breathe through your mouth. Some diseases and certain medications may also cause you to have bad breath, either by causing more bacteria in your mouth or by making your palate extremely dry, thus making it perfect for the bacteria to multiply without your saliva washing it away.

Chronic bad breath is embarrassing and can definitely interfere with social situations and professional success because people don’t want to be near you. Bad breath can also damage your taste buds to the point where food and water begin to taste different or unusual.

Signs of Bad Breath

If you have bad breath, it can be difficult to tell because you won’t be able to smell it yourself, not even if you blow into your hand. You will have to take your cues from others and how they act around you. If someone tells you, then, of course, you will know. Other signs are if someone offers you a mint or gum. This isn’t always the case, but do take note if people are constantly offering you mint or gum. Also note if people don’t look you in the face when they are speaking with you or they speak to you from a distance. If you often sit alone at lunch because it seems people avoid talking to you, this may also be a sign.

Chronic Bad Breath Treatment: What to Do?

If you have chronic bad breath, what is the treatment? You will want to stay away from foods that cause bad breath, such as garlic and onions. Chewing gum or sucking on hard candy will help keep saliva churning in your mouth and saliva helps to fight off bad breath. Another bad breath treatment is to stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water. This will help alleviate dry mouth. Practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth is a good bad breath treatment. If you feel you need a mouthwash, use an all natural mouthwash, one without alcohol, as alcohol dries out the mouth.

If you suffer from chronic bad breath, it can be extremely embarrassing. You can speak to your dentist about bad breath treatment or you can try to treat the problem on your own.
