Gum Disease Treatment: Improve Dental Hygiene
Gum disease is something we’ve all heard about, especially when we go to the dentist, but is it something we really need to be worried about? Isn’t gum disease for those people who don’t ever brush or who never go to the dentist? You’d be surprised at the number of people who brush their teeth, maybe even twice a day, and visit their dentists and yet they still have gum disease. If that’s the case, what type of gum disease treatment is available?
What Causes Gum Disease?
Bacteria is constantly invading your mouth, between your teeth and under your gum line. When you brush your teeth, you get rid of most of the bacteria in your mouth, but with a toothbrush alone, you aren’t able to get between your teeth or under the gum line. This bacteria that remains forms into plaque which becomes that hard tartar buildup on your teeth that your dentist must scrape away when you go in for your cleaning. While the tartar is on your teeth, it continues to teem with bacteria which are eating away at your teeth, your gums, and even the root system of your teeth. Every day, without proper dental hygiene, the bacteria continues to add up. This is why it is so important to not only brush your teeth, but also floss between your teeth as well.
How Do You Diagnose Gum Disease?
The dental hygienist and dentist will be able to tell right away if you have gum disease, either the milder form, known as gingivitis, or the more serious one, known as periodontist. Your gums will be swollen, puffy and possibly irritated. You will have noticed bleeding while brushing your teeth, and the hygienist will notice the bleeding as soon as she begins to check your gums. She will also notice pockets forming between your gums and teeth, which allow food particles and bacteria to get trapped. Your gum lines will have receded, you may have felt aching teeth, or experienced bad breath on a regular basis as well.
How Do You Treat Gum Disease?
Gum disease treatment can be a simple process, but you must make a commitment to follow it. You must improve your brushing and flossing habits to insure that you get as much bacteria and plaque out of your mouth as possible and avoid the tartar build-up. As part of your gum disease treatment, and your overall health, you should see your dentist every six months in order to have your teeth professionally cleaned. Once you finish brushing and flossing, rinse with a natural mouthwash, one that does not contain alcohol. You can even try increasing your vitamin C intake.
Gum disease, if caught early, is reversible. The only gum disease treatment necessary is to have good oral hygiene habits.
